Impact Appalachia

I was the head designer for “IMPACT Appalachia,” a potential merging of Ohio Univeristy’s Voinovich School’s LIGHTS and SEE program. The program is being revamped into Impact Enterprise and Impact Measurement, each housed under the name Impact Appalachia. Having a unified name and design allows clients and funders to see the branded ecosystem as a whole while differentiating what each section specializes in.

⬤ 01. Challenges

Branding Challenges

The largest challenge I faced with this project was design for a brand that is housed under Ohio University but also wants to differentiate itself from that same entity. How do you make something Ohio University branded without pulling straight from their brand guide?

The main deliverables and goals of the project included creating a complete branding ecosystem with logo, fonts, design elements, word mark, website mock and social media mocks in a style guide. All of these items were put together in order to pitch the new name and organizational structure and allow decision makers to visualize the look and feel of these changes.

⬤ 02. Experience

Branding within the University guidelines

I examined the brand guide set in place by Ohio University and then explored relevant and adjacent choices that were referential to the university and fits well with their design.

It was nothing like I had taken on before, and it was a unique challenge for me and my client as well as we navigated something unique yet complimentary.

⬤ 03. Process

Fulfilling the mission for Impact Appalachia

At the end of the semester long project, we were able to develop a near finalized logo (with holiday options for a bit of fun flair!), font choices, color pallets, word mark, a website home page mock and some social media post mocks. One of the elements I enjoyed most was getting to create a hand drawn logo and word mark! Especially in the investment sphere, you don’t see these kind of design choices made often, but it fits really well with the mission of Impact Appalachia and allows it to stand out amongst a sea of other organizations.
