The opportunity to collaborate with the South East Ohio Hope Center this semester has been both inspiring and transformative of my practice. As designers, we have grown immensely, learning to adapt and refine our work to align with the center’s goals of creating a supportive, hopeful, and welcoming environment. I feel like my personal style has really grown throughout this process, and I now feel more confident to collaborate with clients and bring forward strong deliverables. Over the course of the project, the branding evolved significantly, from initial concepts to a cohesive identity that authentically reflects the mission of the Hope Center. This experience has deepened our understanding of the impact thoughtful design can have on fostering connection and trust, and we are truly grateful to have contributed to such an important organization.

⬤ 01. Challenges

Branding Challenges

This semester, working with the South East Ohio Hope Center has been a deeply rewarding experience. Designing for a rehabilitation center posed unique challenges, as we aimed to create materials that were bright, colorful, and inviting while respecting the sensitivity of recovery. Striking the right balance between approachability and the gravity of the center’s mission required careful attention to every design element. While there were some growing pains, as we ( The Designer’s) struggled to step out of our personal style’s, we were able to work as a collective team to find the right stylistic choice for the Hope Center. This process taught us the importance of nuance and the powerful role design plays in communicating complex, human-centered messages.

The design process for the Hope Center logo focused on blending humanistic elements with inspiration drawn from tribal and Celtic symbols, creating a design that feels both culturally rich and universally welcoming. The goal was to craft a logo that resonates across all ages, races, and genders, embodying the idea that healing is a journey for everyone. The most difficult part of designing a logo like this, is making the imperfections feel purposeful, and with lots of iterations we were able to do just that.  Central to this vision is the symbol of a person encircled by a radiant sun, representing vitality, unity, and the promise of renewal. The sun logo perfectly encapsulated all of the idea’s we were playing around with a more gentle and straightforward hand. This imagery conveys a powerful yet approachable message of hope, inviting all who see it to feel encouraged and inspired to begin their healing journey.

Developing ideas

The process of developing a cohesive brand for the South East Ohio Hope Center was both creative and iterative. We began by exploring a variety of ideas inspired by themes of hope, Celtic symbolism, and Athens’ local culture. This required us to fully develop a vibrant but professional color palette, typography, and visual elements that embodied positivity and resilience while remaining approachable. Through this process, we refined concepts like the Celtic Tree of Life, summiting a mountain, and Hawthorn berries, ultimately landing on a joyful sun motif that best represented the Hope Center’s uplifting mission.

Creative Director and Professor Mark, along with Chris MacNeal Executive Director from the South East Ohio Hope Center, played a pivotal role in helping us refine and focus these ideas. Their feedback and guidance allowed us to hone the direction of the branding, ensuring it resonated with the center’s goals. Again this particular design was all about packaging fun, and inviting energy in a way that could still hold weight, and depth. After fully developing the foundational identity was established, we were able to move forward with designing the website and developing creative marketing materials, bringing the brand to life in a way that was both impactful and engaging.

DM Sans is a versatile font that shines in subheadings, offering a clean and modern aesthetic that draws attention without overwhelming the design.

This Typography is based off of the South East Ohio’s current website typography. For the fonts featured in the Logo I used a font called Hornbill as the primary font and Diaphus 404 for the secondary font.

⬤ 03. Process

Fulfilling the mission for South East Ohio Hope Center

At the end of this semester-long project, we successfully developed a finalized logo, font choices, color palettes, merchandise, a website homepage, promotional Images and style guide to help the hope center implement their new branding kit. One of my favorite aspects of the project was the way the logo evolved over time, while the logo portion took up the majority of the timeline I think we ended with something the client and I are really happy with. The color palette consists of a large range of colors, but mainly focuses on yellow and purple. We chose a deep royal purple, to represent the intensity and strength it takes to take the first few steps to recovery. Then a bright sunshine yellow to represent the love and light coming from the support of the hope center. We also added in a bright fresh green, and pink to contrast the yellow and purple as well as bring a sense of growth. We also created a growing vine motif, as well to represent growth.  This personalized approach is not often seen in organizations of this nature, but it aligns beautifully with the Hope Center’s mission of creating a welcoming and supportive environment. I believe our design added a human touch to the branding, a sense of warmth and support radiates from all aspects of the design. These choice helps the center stand out while reinforcing its message of hope and individuality.
